Signs of Hearing Loss

For many people, hearing loss is a gradual process, occurring over a few years. Because of this, you may not even realize you are missing certain sounds because you have become accustomed to not hearing. If you have experienced some of the following, you may have hearing loss and should come in for a hearing check.

Hearing and Your Health

Your hearing plays an important role in your overall health and well-being. You may not realize this, but your hearing is connected to other aspects of your health. Although there are many causes of hearing loss, some causes can be from another health problem. Heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes can all affect your hearing and when left untreated, can lead to hearing loss.

If you have an underlying health condition, it’s important to have your hearing checked on a regular basis. This way any signs of hearing loss can be caught early. When left untreated, hearing loss can also have a negative impact on your cognitive abilities. Your brain needs your hearing in order to be active and healthy. If you leave your hearing loss untreated, your brain will eventually forget certain sounds, over time this can eventually lead to cognitive decline.

Hearing aids are the best way to manage hearing loss and to retain your brain health. Contact us today to learn more about the affordable hearing aids we carry.

Types of Hearing Loss

There are three main types of hearing loss.

Sensorineural

Sensorineural hearing loss is the most common type of hearing loss, affecting roughly 90% to 95% of hearing aid wearers. This type of hearing loss occurs when there is damage to the cochlea or the hearing nerve. This can also occur naturally due to old age, as the hair cells in the inner ear (which are partly responsible for your hearing) begin to deteriorate. Sensorineural hearing loss responds well to hearing aids.

Conductive

Conductive hearing loss occurs when sounds are not transmitted or “conducted” properly through the ear canal, eardrum, and middle ear. This type of hearing loss can be caused by earwax build-up, ear infection, fluid in the middle ear, perforation (holes) in the eardrum, or trauma to the head/ear. Conductive hearing loss is treated surgically or with antibiotics.

Mixed

Mixed hearing loss is a combination of sensorineural and conductive. First the conductive portion will be treated with antibiotics or by a physician. Then the sensorineural portion can be treated with hearing aids.
